Google's Gemini AI assistant now runs as a native Windows desktop app, letting you pull it up instantly with Alt + Space while you work. No browser tab required. If your organisation uses Google Workspace with Gemini enabled, your team can draft emails, summarise documents, and generate images without leaving the application they're already in.

Why does a desktop app matter when Gemini already works in the browser?

Context switching kills productivity. Every time someone clicks away from their spreadsheet to open a browser tab, they lose focus. The desktop app sits ready in the background. Hit Alt + Space, ask your question, get your answer, and you're back to work. It's the difference between having a colleague at the next desk versus having to walk down the hall.

The app also connects directly to your Google Workspace data. Need to draft a project update? Gemini can pull relevant details from your Gmail threads and Drive files, then help you write something coherent. That's genuinely useful when you're staring at a blank document at 4pm on a Friday.

What can the Gemini desktop app actually do?

Here's what's available right now:

  • Quick assist over any window – The keyboard shortcut overlays Gemini on whatever you're working on. Fact-check a claim in a report, brainstorm headline options, or ask it to explain something you've just read.
  • Draft content using your Workspace data – Ask Gemini to write a summary of a project based on emails and documents already in your account. It pulls context from Gmail and Drive.
  • Generate images – Create custom visuals using Nano Banana (Google's image generation tool) without opening another application.

More features are coming, but these three cover the most common "I need quick help" moments during a workday.

How do admins control access?

If you're managing Google Workspace for your organisation, the good news is there's nothing new to configure. The desktop app follows your existing Generative AI settings in the Admin console. If Gemini is already enabled for your users, the app will work. If you've restricted it, those restrictions apply here too.

The feature is on by default for organisations with Gemini access. You can adjust this through the Admin console if you need tighter control over which users or groups can use it.

How do users get started?

  1. Go to gemini.google/desktop
  2. Download and install the app for Windows 10 or 11
  3. Sign in with your Google account
  4. Press Alt + Space whenever you need assistance

That's it. No complicated setup, no additional licences beyond your existing Workspace subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work with personal Google accounts or only Workspace?
Both. The Gemini desktop app is available to Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts.

Can I turn off the desktop app for my organisation?
Yes. Admins can control access through the Generative AI settings in the Google Workspace Admin console.

Is there a Mac version?
This launch is Windows-only (Windows 10 and 11). Google hasn't announced a Mac release date yet.

Does it cost extra?
The desktop app is included with existing Gemini access. If your Workspace plan already includes Gemini, there's no additional charge for the desktop app.
