Gmail Live lets you search your inbox by voice and get spoken answers pulled directly from your emails. Rolling out now to paid Google Workspace accounts, this feature uses Gemini AI to understand natural questions—like "What's the status on the Henderson order?" or "When's my flight tomorrow?"—and reads back the relevant information while showing you exactly which email it came from. If your team spends time scrolling through threads while juggling other tasks, this changes how quickly they can find what they need.
What does Gmail Live actually do?
Think of it as a voice-powered search assistant that knows your inbox. You tap the Live button in Gmail's search bar on your phone, ask a question out loud, and Gemini processes it against your emails in real time. The answer comes back as synthesised speech, with a source card showing which message the information was pulled from.
It's particularly useful when you're:
- Walking between meetings and need to confirm a detail before you arrive
- Driving and can't scroll through a thread safely
- Handling something physical—stock, equipment, paperwork—and need both hands free
The latency is low enough that it feels conversational rather than clunky.

Your organisation needs Gemini in Workspace access. If you're already using Google Workspace through Blue Chip Technologies Ltd., your admin can check whether Gemini features are enabled in the Admin Console.
How do admins turn it on?
Good news: it's on by default for organisations with Gemini access. It follows your existing smart features and personalisation settings, so if you've already configured those policies, Gmail Live respects them automatically.
If you need to adjust access:
- Open the Google Admin Console
- Navigate to Apps → Google Workspace → Gmail
- Review the Gemini features settings under Smart features and personalisation
- Apply changes to the relevant organisational units
What do end users need to do?
Not much. On a supported Android or iOS device:
- Open the Gmail app
- Tap the search bar
- Look for the Live entry point
- Grant microphone access when prompted (first time only)
- Start asking questions
One limitation worth noting: as of launch, Gmail Live is only available to users in the US with EN-US set as their language. Google hasn't announced an expansion timeline yet, but these features typically roll out to other English-speaking regions within a few months.
Is my email data being used to train AI?
This is the question that comes up in every conversation about AI features. Gmail Live processes your queries against your own inbox data to generate answers—it's not sending your emails off to train public models. The feature operates within Workspace's existing data governance framework, and admins retain control through the standard smart features policies.
That said, if your organisation has specific compliance requirements, it's worth reviewing Google's data processing documentation before enabling Gemini features broadly.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose a different voice for the responses?
Yes. Gmail Live lets you select your preferred voice directly within the feature settings. You're not stuck with a single default.
Does this work offline?
No. Gmail Live requires an internet connection to process queries through Gemini and access your inbox data.
Will it read out sensitive information aloud?
It will read whatever's relevant to your question from your emails. If you're in a public space, use earphones or wait until you have privacy—same as you would with any voice assistant.
When will it be available outside the US?
Google hasn't confirmed dates. The initial rollout is US-only with EN-US language settings. We'll update clients as availability expands.
