Google Workspace's new AI Inbox feature automatically pulls action items and deadlines from your emails and summarises long threads—so you can see exactly what needs your attention without reading every message. If you've ever opened Gmail after a day of meetings and felt that familiar dread scrolling through dozens of unread emails, this update is worth your attention.
The feature is now rolling out to paid Workspace accounts (Business, Enterprise, and Frontline Plus editions), with Education editions following in the coming months.
What does AI Inbox actually do?
Two things, really:
Suggested to-dos – The system scans your email conversations and extracts action items, deliverables, and deadlines. That client who buried a request for updated specs in paragraph four of a six-paragraph email? You'll see it flagged without having to hunt for it.
Topics to catch up on – Instead of reading through a 15-message thread about a project change, you get a summary of the key decisions and status updates. Useful when you've been pulled into a conversation halfway through.

Who can use it right now?
The rollout started 12 October 2026 for Rapid Release domains, with Scheduled Release domains following from 26 October. Here's the breakdown:
| Workspace Edition | Availability |
|---|---|
| Business Starter, Standard, Plus | Now rolling out |
| Enterprise Starter, Standard, Plus | Now rolling out |
| Frontline Plus | Now rolling out |
| AI Pro for Education | Coming months |
Important limitation: As of launch, AI Inbox is only available to users in the US with EN-US set as their language. Google hasn't announced a timeline for other regions yet.
How do I turn it on?
There's no admin toggle—it simply appears in eligible accounts as the rollout reaches you. Users can access AI Inbox from the Gmail desktop client or mobile app menu once it's available.
Is this useful for small teams?
Honestly? It depends on your email volume. If you're a five-person operation where everyone's copied on every email, the summaries might feel redundant. But if you're managing multiple client accounts, coordinating with external suppliers, or running a team where decisions happen fast over email—yes, it'll save you time.
Think about that Monday morning catch-up after a long weekend. Instead of spending the first hour triaging, you can scan your to-dos and topic summaries in minutes.
