Google Classroom's Gemini Notebook now gives teachers AI-generated summaries showing how students actually engage with assigned notebooks—what questions they're asking, where they're struggling, and what topics they've grasped. For schools and educational organisations using Google Workspace for Education, this means educators spend less time guessing whether a resource helped and more time adjusting their teaching based on real student interactions.

What do these insight summaries actually show teachers?

When a teacher assigns a Gemini Notebook through Google Classroom, they can now see three things:

  • An overall engagement summary – a quick view of how students interacted with the notebook
  • Common themes – patterns like frequently asked questions, areas where students showed strength, and topics needing more support
  • Individual chat transcripts – the actual conversations students had with the notebook, so teachers can verify the AI's summary and spot specific students who might need help

Students see a notification letting them know their teacher can view these conversations. No surprises.

How do admins control who can use this?

Workspace administrators manage access through the Admin console. Teachers need Gemini Notebook set to "On" for their organisational unit (OU) or group to create and assign notebooks. Students need the same setting enabled to interact with assigned notebooks.

The new external sharing controls are worth noting too. If your organisation works across multiple domains—say, a school district with separate domains for different campuses—admins can now designate trusted domains. This lets teachers assign notebooks to students even when they're not all on the same domain. External sharing is off by default, and admins control it at the domain, OU, or group level.

For step-by-step setup, Google's Help Centre covers turning Gemini Notebook on or off and managing sharing settings.

Which Google Workspace editions include this?

Insight summaries are available across Google Workspace for Education tiers:

  • Education Fundamentals
  • Education Standard
  • Education Plus

If your organisation uses Gemini LTI, this feature is coming in the weeks ahead.

Frequently asked questions

Can students see the insight summaries their teacher receives?
No. Only the teacher who assigned the notebook can view the engagement summaries and chat transcripts. Students are notified that their conversations are visible to their teacher, but they don't see the aggregated insights.

Does this work for any Gemini Notebook a student opens?
No—insight summaries only work for notebooks assigned through Google Classroom. If a student opens a Gemini Notebook independently, that activity isn't tracked for teacher insights.

Can we enable this for some teachers but not others?
Yes. Admins can control Gemini Notebook access at the OU or group level, so you can roll it out gradually or limit it to specific departments.
