Google Classroom now includes Guided Learning, a Gemini-powered feature that gives students step-by-step support on assignments without simply handing them answers. For schools and educational organisations using Google Workspace for Education, this means teachers can embed AI tutoring directly into any assignment—students get help when they're stuck, and educators get visibility into where the class is struggling.

What exactly is Guided Learning in Google Classroom?

Guided Learning is a mode within the Gemini app that acts like a patient tutor. Instead of giving students the answer outright, it walks them through problems with hints, scaffolding, and prompts that encourage them to work things out themselves.

Teachers attach a Guided Learning activity to any assignment. When a student opens it, they're in a focused environment—no side panels, no ability to wander off into unrelated chats. They stay on task, and the AI stays on curriculum.

The feature is built on Google's LearnLM research, which focuses on how AI can genuinely support learning rather than shortcut it.

How does this actually help teachers?

Here's the practical bit. A maths teacher assigns a problem set. Three students get stuck on question four. Instead of waiting until the next class (or giving up), they can ask the Guided Learning assistant for help. It won't solve it for them, but it'll nudge them toward the right approach.

Meanwhile, the teacher sees AI-generated summaries showing that question four is causing trouble across the class. That's useful information for tomorrow's lesson.

Teachers can also read individual chat transcripts if they want to understand exactly where a student went wrong—or right.

What do administrators need to do?

Guided Learning requires Gemini to be enabled for your organisation. Admins need to:

  1. Ensure teachers and students are in a group or organisational unit (OU) with Gemini set to "On"
  2. Review Google's Help Centre documentation on enabling Gemini for users
  3. Communicate the rollout to teaching staff so they know the feature is available

The rollout began in November 2026 and is available to Education Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus subscribers.

Does it work with Chromebooks and classroom management tools?

Yes. For schools using ChromeOS with Class Tools, Guided Learning integrates directly. Students launch the activity in a locked-down, single-tab environment. Teachers can remotely view screens to monitor progress—helpful for keeping younger students focused or for exam-style practice sessions.

Practical ways to use Guided Learning

  • STEM problem-solving: Attach it to physics or maths assignments so students can work through tricky steps independently
  • Essay brainstorming: Let students talk through their ideas with the AI before group discussions or peer review
  • Homework support: Offer it as an on-demand tutor for remote study, so students aren't stuck waiting for office hours
  • Extension work: Use it for open-ended exploration tasks where students can go deeper at their own pace

Frequently asked questions

Is Guided Learning available in all languages?
It's rolling out globally in all Gemini-supported languages. Check Google's documentation for the current list.

Can teachers see what students discuss with the AI?
Yes. Teachers have access to AI-generated summaries at both class and individual level, plus full chat transcripts for each student.

Does this replace tutoring or teacher support?
No. It's designed to handle initial questions and common sticking points, freeing teachers to focus on students who need more direct, human support.

Which Google Workspace for Education plans include this?
Education Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus all have access to Guided Learning.
