Google Vault now lets you filter and export Gemini conversations from your Workspace environment—meaning your organisation can finally include AI-assisted work in eDiscovery, audits and legal holds. If you've been waiting for proper compliance coverage before rolling out Gemini across your teams, this update removes a significant blocker.
Why does this matter for compliance teams?
Until now, Gemini conversations in Workspace sat outside the standard Vault export workflow. That created a gap: your staff could be using AI to draft emails, summarise documents or generate meeting notes, but those interactions weren't easily retrievable when legal or regulatory requests came in.
The new filtered export closes that gap. Admins can now pull Gemini conversation histories from Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Meet—all from the same Vault interface they already use for other Workspace data.
What can you actually export?
Exports include:
- User prompts – exactly what someone asked Gemini
- AI responses – the full text Gemini returned
- Generated attachments – images or other files Gemini created
- Links to referenced files – connections to Drive documents, Gmail threads or other Workspace content the conversation touched
- Citations – sources Gemini pulled from
Everything comes out in JSON format, tagged to match the GenAI conversation structure. That makes it easier to parse programmatically or feed into third-party eDiscovery tools.
How do you set up a filtered export?
- Open Google Vault and go to the Search tab.
- Select Gemini in Workspace from the service dropdown (it's now alphabetised).
- Define your scope—specific user accounts or organisational units (up to 5,000 users).
- Set your date range and time zone.
- Click Export.
If you prefer working via API, support will be live within 14 days of the UI rollout.
What about retention and litigation holds?
This release focuses on exports. Google has confirmed that retention rules and litigation holds for Gemini data are coming in future updates. For now, admins can control conversation history settings at the OU level—including preventing users from manually deleting conversations or configuring automatic deletion after a period of inactivity.
Worth noting: exports only capture conversations where history is turned on. If your organisation has history disabled, there's nothing to export.

Frequently asked questions
Do end users need to do anything?
No. This is entirely admin-controlled. Users won't see any changes to their Gemini experience.
Can I export Gemini conversations from the standalone Gemini app?
This update covers Gemini in Workspace—the AI features embedded in Gmail, Docs, Sheets and so on. Vault support for the standalone Gemini app was announced separately.
What format are exports delivered in?
JSON. The metadata tags align with Google's GenAI conversation format, so they're consistent with other Gemini exports.
Is this available now?
Yes—both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains have access.
