Microsoft has just announced Scout, an always-on AI agent that works in the background across your Microsoft 365 apps—scheduling meetings, flagging risks, blocking focus time, and keeping projects moving without you having to prompt it every time. It's the first of what Microsoft calls "Autopilots": agents that hold your priorities and act on them autonomously, within the permissions your organisation sets.

What exactly is Microsoft Scout?

Scout is an AI agent that connects to Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, and SharePoint. Unlike Copilot (which responds when you ask it something), Scout stays active in the background. It watches your calendar, chats, emails, and files, then takes action based on what it learns about how you work.

Think of it this way: you've got a project deadline in two weeks. Scout notices the deliverable, sees your calendar is packed, and automatically blocks time for you to actually do the work. It can also spot when a decision has stalled in an email thread and flag it before it becomes a problem.

How is this different from regular Copilot?

Copilot answers questions and generates content when you ask. Scout doesn't wait to be asked—it monitors, anticipates, and acts. Microsoft is calling this category "Autopilots" to distinguish them from the chat-based assistants we're used to.

The other key difference: Scout operates with its own identity in your organisation's directory. That means every action it takes is logged and attributable, not hidden behind some anonymous service account.

Is it secure enough for business use?

This is where Microsoft has clearly thought about enterprise concerns. Scout:

Operates under its own governed Entra identity (your IT team can see exactly what it's doing)
Respects Microsoft Purview policies, including sensitivity labels and data loss prevention
Can require human approval before taking sensitive actions
Keeps credentials scoped to specific tasks and redacted from logs

It's built on OpenClaw open-source technology, and Microsoft is contributing policy conformance tools back to that project—so organisations running their own OpenClaw deployments can validate their security configuration.

When can you get it?

Scout is currently in private preview for select customers and available as an experimental release through Microsoft's Frontier programme. Access requires Frontier enrolment, Intune policy configuration, and a GitHub Copilot licence.
