Google's Gemini app now lets you create, preview, and edit documents, spreadsheets, slide decks, and PDFs without leaving your conversation. Ask Gemini to generate a file, see it rendered right in the chat window, make changes inline or request refinements, then export to Google Drive or download. It's a genuine shortcut between "I need a document" and "here's the finished file."

What exactly can you do with file creation in Gemini?

Think of it as turning a prompt into a working draft you can polish on the spot. Here's what's supported:

  • Slide decks – Describe what you need, preview the layout in chat, tweak the tone or structure with follow-up prompts, then open in Google Slides or download as PPTX or PDF.
  • Spreadsheets – Generate trackers, tables, or data models from plain-language instructions. Preview them, then open directly in Google Sheets.
  • Documents and PDFs – Draft Google Docs, Markdown, LaTeX, or TXT files. Edit manually or ask Gemini to revise. Upload straight to Drive when you're happy.
  • Code files – Generate and refine code, then copy or export.

PDF preview and editing work on both web and mobile. Everything else (documents, spreadsheets, slides, Markdown, TXT, code) is web-only for now.

Why does this matter for your team?

Most of us have sat through the loop: open a blank doc, wrestle with formatting, paste bits from old files, realise the structure's wrong, start again. This feature compresses that process.

Say you're prepping a quarterly review for Monday morning. You describe the structure to Gemini, it produces a slide deck, you expand to full screen, highlight a section that sounds too formal, and ask it to soften the language. Five minutes later you're exporting a PDF for stakeholders who don't use Google Slides. No app-switching, no copy-paste gymnastics.

Or picture your ops team needing a simple project tracker. Instead of building a spreadsheet from scratch, they prompt Gemini, preview the columns, adjust a formula, and open it in Sheets ready to share.

How do I get started?

  1. Open the Gemini app (web or mobile).
  2. Type a prompt describing the file you need—"Create a 6-slide investor update covering Q3 revenue, product milestones, and next-quarter outlook," for example.
  3. Gemini generates a preview in the chat.
  4. Expand to full screen to edit directly, or highlight text and ask Gemini to refine it.
  5. Export to Google Drive, download, or open in the relevant Workspace app.

There's no admin toggle to enable; if your organisation has the Gemini app turned on, users already have access. Check Google's Help Centre article on enabling or disabling the Gemini app if you need to review your settings.

Does this replace Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides?

No. Think of it as a fast on-ramp. Once a file needs serious formatting, formulas, or collaboration features, you'll still open it in the full app. But for first drafts, quick exports, or one-off documents, staying inside Gemini saves clicks.

If your business already uses Google Workspace, this slots in without extra licences or setup. For organisations still evaluating cloud productivity tools, our Google Workspace solutions page explains what's included and how we support deployments.

Frequently asked questions

Is this feature available on mobile?
PDF preview and editing work on Android and iOS. Other file types (docs, sheets, slides, code) currently require the web version.

Do I need a paid Workspace plan?
No. The feature is available to Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and personal Google account holders wherever the Gemini app is offered.

Can I control who in my organisation uses file generation?
There's no separate admin control for file generation. Access follows your existing Gemini app settings—if a user can access the Gemini app, they can generate files.

What languages are supported?
File generation works in every language where the Gemini app is available.
