Google Meet now translates speech in real-time across 63 languages, automatically detecting what language each person is speaking and converting it to each listener's preferred language. No more configuring language pairs before the meeting starts. Someone speaks Spanish, another person replies in Japanese, a third chimes in with German—everyone hears the conversation in their own language, near-instantly.

This is a significant shift for businesses with international teams, clients, or suppliers. We've all been on calls where someone's struggling to follow along, or where you're relying on one bilingual colleague to interpret everything. That friction slows decisions down. It creates misunderstandings. Sometimes it means deals don't happen at all.

How does the automatic language detection actually work?

Powered by Gemini 3.5 Live Translate, Meet now listens to whoever's speaking and identifies the language on the fly. It then translates that speech into each participant's chosen language—displayed as captions and played as audio that stays in sync.

The clever bit: speakers can switch languages mid-sentence or mid-meeting, and Meet keeps up. You don't have to tell the system "this meeting will be in French and English." It just figures it out.

Each participant controls their own experience. You enable translation for yourself using a button in the meeting toolbar. You can also tell Meet which languages you already understand, so it doesn't bother translating those.

What do you need to use speech translation?

You'll need one of these Google Workspace or Google AI plans:

  • Business Standard or Plus
  • Enterprise Standard or Plus
  • Frontline Plus
  • Google AI Pro or Ultra
  • AI Expanded Access or AI Ultra Access
  • Education editions with the AI Pro add-on

If the meeting organiser has an eligible plan, all participants—including external guests—can use translation. For direct 1:1 calls, either party having an eligible plan is enough.

Meeting duration limits

Plan type Translation time limit
Base Workspace / AI Pro Up to 90 minutes per meeting
AI Expanded Access, AI Ultra Access, Google AI Ultra Up to 8 hours per meeting

What doesn't work with speech translation?

A few scenarios aren't supported:

  • Live streams
  • Meeting recordings (translation happens live, not in playback)
  • Client-side encrypted (CSE) meetings
  • Dial-in participants or third-party interoperability calls
  • Meetings using adaptive audio

If you're using Google Meet hardware in a conference room, people in that room can hear translations from remote participants. However, speech from the room's hardware won't be translated for others—so if your boardroom is speaking Portuguese, remote attendees won't get that translated automatically.

How do admins control this feature?

Speech translation is on by default for eligible Workspace editions (assuming you've enabled the Gemini for Meet admin setting). You can disable or enable it at the organisational unit or group level.

Go to: Admin console > Apps > Google Workspace > Google Meet > Gemini settings

Individual users still have to actively turn translation on during each meeting—it doesn't start automatically.

What about privacy?

Users choose whether their speech gets translated for others. This preference can be changed anytime in Meet settings. Google states it doesn't store voice data or use your voice to train models.

When is this rolling out?

Rapid Release domains started seeing this from 22 October 2026, with full visibility within a few days. Scheduled Release domains began gradual rollout from 2 November 2026, taking up to 15 days.

Mobile users need to update their Google Meet app to access these features.

Frequently asked questions

Can external guests use speech translation in my meetings?
Yes. If you organise the meeting and have an eligible Workspace or AI plan, all participants—including guests from other domains—can use translation.

Do I need to set up language pairs before the meeting?
No. Meet automatically detects spoken languages and translates to each participant's preferred language. You don't configure anything meeting-wide.

Is my voice data stored or used for training?
No. Google states it doesn't store voice data or train models on your voice. Users control whether their speech is translated.

Does this work on mobile?
Yes, on Android and iOS—just make sure you've updated to the latest version of the Google Meet app.
