Google Voice now works with local phone carriers in 34 countries, letting businesses keep their existing carrier relationships while gaining Google's cloud phone system features. If you've been holding off on Google Voice because you wanted to stick with a local provider for calling plans, Carrier Link removes that barrier.
What is Carrier Link, and why does it matter for your business?
Carrier Link connects Google Voice to certified local telephone carriers through a simplified SIP connection. Instead of buying calling plans directly from Google, you purchase them from a carrier in your country—but still get the full Google Voice experience: voicemail transcription, call forwarding, integration with Google Meet and Calendar, and admin controls in the Google Workspace console.
Think of it this way: you get Google's interface and features on top of your carrier's network and billing. For businesses that already have preferred carrier relationships, or operate in regions where local carriers offer better rates or coverage, this is a practical middle ground.
The expansion covers the US, Canada, and much of Europe, bringing the total to 34 countries. Google's certified partners—Southlight Services, Gamma Communications, Tata Communications, and Telefonica Global Solutions—handle the provisioning.
How does setup actually work?
The process is simpler than traditional SIP trunking because Carrier Link uses a pre-configured, multi-tenant implementation. Your IT team doesn't need to manage SIP infrastructure.
- Contact one of the certified Carrier Link partners (listed above).
- The partner provisions your SIP Link licences and phone numbers.
- Your Workspace admin assigns those numbers to users, desk phones, auto-attendants, or ring groups in the Admin console.
- End users don't need to do anything—calls just work through the Google Voice app or desk phones.
No hardware to install. No complex SIP trunk configuration. Billing goes through your carrier, not Google.
Who benefits most from Carrier Link?
Smaller organisations often get the most value here. If you've got 10–50 staff and want a proper cloud phone system without hiring someone to maintain PBX hardware, Carrier Link gives you that. You pick a local carrier you trust, they handle the calling plan, and Google handles the software side.
Larger organisations with existing carrier contracts can also use this to consolidate communications into Workspace without renegotiating everything.
What Google Voice subscription do I need?
Carrier Link works with all three Google Voice tiers:
- Google Voice Starter – Basic calling and voicemail
- Google Voice Standard – Adds auto-attendants, ring groups, desk phone support
- Google Voice Premier – Adds advanced reporting and automatic call recording
You'll need the Standard or Premier tier if you want features like auto-attendants or ring groups with your Carrier Link numbers.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use Carrier Link if I already have Google Voice with a Google calling plan?
Yes. Customers in the newly added countries can continue using Google's first-party calling plans or switch to Carrier Link with a local carrier. It's your choice.
Do I need to install any hardware?
No. Carrier Link is entirely cloud-based. If you want desk phones, Google Voice supports certified devices, but they're optional—most users just use the mobile or desktop app.
Which countries now support Carrier Link?
The latest expansion adds the US, Canada, and much of Europe to the existing 20 countries. Google hasn't published the full list publicly, but your Carrier Link partner can confirm availability in your region.
How long does setup take?
Once your carrier partner provisions the licences and numbers, assigning them in the Admin console takes minutes. The rollout to your users is nearly immediate.
